Landscaping Privacy Benefits: Safety, Comfort & Noise

Landscaping privacy isn’t just about keeping people out of your business – it’s a safety issue. Especially when you’re at a dinner party with friends and your neighbor is rubbernecking for a little too long. It’s just plain awkward.

When you have children, designing your landscape with privacy in mind will give you peace of mind to protect your growing family and valuables.

Erecting a fence or screening plants is not just about keeping people out, it’s about keeping your animals or children inside as well.

On your days off, you can have friends over, free of worry that your neighbors will complain about the noise. What they don’t know can’t hurt you – or them. Lastly, landscaping privacy doesn’t have to just be a barrier – it can be a tasteful addition to your outdoor decor.

Recommended Landscape Tips to Increase Privacy

However you like to enjoy your swimming pool or rid yourself of tan lines is your business, but closing off neighbors is a must for privacy.

Below, we’ve outlined our favorite examples from our design portfolio to increase privacy the creative way.

Living Walls Act as a Decorative Barrier

So you want privacy but you don’t want to be “that neighbor” who suddenly erects a wall in between properties. Just explain to your neighbors, this is a decoration, not a boundary.

The benefits of vertical succulent gardens is that they come with minimal maintenance and jaw-dropping beauty that will serve as an effective barrier to keep prying eyes out of your business.

Erecting a living wall (garden) in San Diego is ideal because they are easy to maintain and are a great conversation starter. The small amount of water native that plants require help maintains this perfect green installation year round.

Hedges are Elegant Screening Plants

Nothing speaks timeless elegance like royal, over the head, hedges. Hedges have been privacy increasing plants for decades because of their impenetrable branches and leaves.

There’s a reason aristocrats used them throughout their castle grounds. They grow tremendously high, are easy to trim and make for gorgeous barriers. If your neighbor is opposed to a fense, this barrier is more naturally appealing from both sides. They are also minimal maintenance and require infrequent trimming.

We planted these hedges on the side of this backyard to block out the neighbors, but leave room for the view. Now, this couple can enjoy the vacation home feeling of a romantic sunset by the fire, without the worry of their neighbors trying to get in on the action.

Increase Privacy with Bamboo Grass

Bamboo is a very popular screening plant as it adds a vertical dimension to your landscape while creating an opaque barrier. Especially popular in Zen-style gardens, bamboo is a great option to bring in some exotic flavor no matter where you live. It’s best to combine this plant with layering techniques. They are a great landscaping plant for San Diego’s climate!

This family wanted to create an entertaining transitional space for when they had guests over and not have to worry about the neighbors knowing they had people over. We chose the bamboo because of its durability, extremely fast growth rate, and tranquil vibes.

Decorative Privacy Fences

Nothing’s more brilliant for landscape construction to increase privacy than the old fashioned fence, but if fences are too boring for you we can certainly give it a twist. For example, choosing diverse types of wood or integrating artificial turf into the wood is an innovative take on a traditional fence.

This home is located just east of downtown San Diego, which means small and tight living spaces. We took the client’s specific request and used it to design a multi-use outdoor living space where kids could play securely.

When living right next to a metropolitan area, there isn’t much greenery and this was an excellent way to create the illusion of being surrounded by nature.

We designed this fence to have turf slats instead of using all wood to give this couple a taste of nature, without the maintenance. For people who don’t have a lawn, wanted to block out the noisy neighborhood, and had small space to work with, we’d say our designers knocked it out of the park!

Reduce Noise for Increased Landscaping Privacy

Privacy isn’t just about not being seen.

It is also about not being heard or hearing the outside world. Your backyard is your personal oasis where you want to escape the world.

Whether you’re having a party or looking for a quiet place to read, be sure to explore plenty of drought tolerant landscape ideas to increase your privacy and reduce noise transmission. Below, we’ve added some of our favorite noise reducing landscape options for privacy.

Achieve Peace & Serenity with a Waterfall

A water feature is an excellent technique to muffle the noise of what is going on inside or outside of your backyard. This works by creating a consistent white noise effect in your home, much like a fan helps you to sleep.

Waterfalls add another dimension to your landscaping decor because of the natural feel they add to a landscape.

In this project, we had the challenge of designing on a landscape on an extended slope, while also addressing the neighbor’s constant noise complaints.

This waterfall was crafted to achieve a specific, gentle noise, and water flow through the strategic placement of each stone. The stream runs off of flat stones, crashing through various levels, creating a delightful sound.

Emerald Green Thujas are Fast Growing Privacy Trees

Similar to hedges, Emerald Green Thujas are a natural privacy barrier for people’s homes. The biggest reason is their growth rate and layering foliage.

They have a growth rate of up to five feet per year!

Their ability to be fully grown, mature trees in such a short amount of time makes them amazing for landscape privacy. They also do not need watering schedules or feeding schedules, making them unbelievably easy to maintain.

The owners of this home wanted a family friendly home design but didn’t want the neighbors to hear them all the time. As custom home builders, our architecture plan was to plant the Emerald Green trees two feet apart so their foliage would grow tightly together and create a solid barrier.

As a result, we muffled the noise and created a gorgeous landscape to increase the privacy of their home. Now, they have family parties all the time and love enjoying their new outdoor space.

Outdoor Rooms Block Noise

By far one of our most favorite projects was this landscape architecture and design in San Diego. There is the perfect amount of wall space for privacy while keeping it open for the outdoor beauty.

This family wanted to be able to spend all of their time outside, without ever wanting to make their way into the living room. However, their biggest concern was their neighbors complaining about the noise.

Instead of creating a fully enclosed outdoor room, we decided to have cut outs on the side, neighbor facing walls and leave the back entirely open. The neighbors were taken care of with the side walls absorbing most noises and sights.

Where the beauty of being outside is taken advantage of with the open spaces. Even after the sun goes down, this family can enjoy their backyard with our innovative outdoor lighting idea, a bowl of popcorn, and an action packed movie.
