Multi-functional family Living Space
This family residence in North Park wanted to upgrade their outdoor living space to create a minimal yet impactful landscape design for their Craftsman home’s backyard.
Previously, there was an underutilized deck which limited the use of their landscape. We completely renovated their landscape so they could maximize the functionality of this small living space. We added a fully operational raised two-level deck complete with an outdoor kitchen, bar, dining area, and lounging space as the highlight of this project along with ample planting for an added colorful touch.
Focusing on an open layout, the family wanted to always be able to keep an eye on their children so we installed a stainless steel cable railing for the deck to maximize visibility from both inside and outside the home. This living space emphasizes different textures and pops of color through the use of Redwood in the deck and Flagstone for the paver design. The color coordinated pillow accents contrast the white plant pots in this modern San Diego landscape construction.
In order to further amplify the functionality of this landscape, we also incorporated a Cantilever Umbrella in the bar and lounging space that features a rotating arm for multiple functions and situations from shade to rain. By incorporating natural materials such as stone and wood, we created an organic yet modern landscape for this home.
For an artistic touch, we also added ambient landscape lighting throughout this living space to contrast the soft background against the robust deck. This functional and aesthetic lighting was installed in the steps and BBQ of the deck while also used for soft highlights of the various trees and plants such as African Tulips, Agave, and Bamboo.
