Toilets and washing machines account for nearly half of the average home’s indoor water usage. Replace older models with high-efficiency ones to conserve water, reduce your water bills, and qualify for these incentives:
Rebates for High-Efficiency Washing Machines
HE washers use less than half of the water that standard machines consume. They also need less energy per cycle, lowering your electricity bill as well. Rebates for high-efficiency washing machines start at $85.
Rebates for Premium High-Efficiency Toilets (PHETs)
Low-flow toilets are one thing, but PHETs use only 1.1 gallons per flush or less. This is 20% less than the WaterSense standard for high-efficiency toilets. Rebates for premium high-efficiency toilets start at $40.
Up to 70% of California’s residential water supply goes toward watering landscapes. Reduce your usage by installing the following products and devices outside your San Diego home:
Weather-Based Irrigation Controllers (WBICs) & Soil Moisture Sensor Systems (SMSSs)
When Mother Nature takes care of the lawn watering for you, there’s no need for the sprinklers to come on. Rather than monitoring this yourself, a Weather-Based Irrigation Controller can do it for you.
This device automatically adjusts the irrigation schedule based on soil conditions, plant types, and weather changes. This takes the guesswork out of watering your landscape—and qualifies you for WBIC rebates starting at $80 per controller (for less than one acre) or $35 per station (for more than one acre).
Similarly, Soil Moisture Sensor Systems detect soil wetness and determine when watering is necessary. These work in tandem with WBICs to start and stop your irrigation system. SMSS rebates are the same amounts as WBIC rebates, but you can only apply for one or the other, even if you install both.
Rotating Sprinkler Nozzles
These efficient irrigation devices eliminate wasteful water runoff by applying directed, uniform water distribution to your landscape. Rebates for rotating sprinkler nozzles start at $2 per nozzle with a minimum of 30 nozzles required to qualify.
Rain Barrels & Cisterns
Catching and holding water for reuse in your landscape minimizes municipal water usage. Plus, plants prefer rainwater because it lacks minerals and chemicals. Rebates start at $35 per rain barrel and $250 per cistern.
Reduce water usage by up to 60% by replacing your traditional lawn with drought-tolerant landscaping. Last year, San Diego County launched its Landscape Transformation Program, allowing residents to receive $2.75 per square foot of turf they replace with sustainable landscape features.
