San Diego Xeriscape Plants

Scroll Down

San Diego is a notoriously dry region, with recurring droughts impacting homeowners year after year. In 2025 alone, 100% of San Diego residents were affected by drought conditions, making water conservation more important than ever.

For homeowners, this often creates a challenge between maintaining an attractive landscape and keeping water use and utility costs under control. Traditional turf lawns require significant irrigation to stay green, especially during hot summer months.

That is where xeriscaping comes in. Xeriscaping offers a way to create a lush, natural looking landscape using plants and design strategies that thrive in San Diego’s climate while dramatically reducing water use.

Key Insights

  • San Diego’s recurring droughts make water efficient landscaping a practical necessity for homeowners.
  • Xeriscaping allows for full, vibrant landscapes without the heavy water demands of traditional lawns.
  • Drip irrigation is typically required during the plant establishment phase and can be reduced once plants are established.
  • Native plants and drought tolerant species are naturally suited to San Diego’s soil, sun, and climate.
  • Succulents, grasses, flowering plants, and trees can all be used to create texture, color, and shade in a xeriscape design.
  • Once established, xeriscape landscapes require less maintenance, less water, and lower long term costs.

What Is Xeriscaping?

Xeriscaping, pronounced zeer-uh-scaping, is a form of landscaping that focuses on water conservation by relying on native, drought-resistant plants and efficient design. The term comes from Greek origins, with “Xeros” meaning dry or withered.

However, xeriscaping doesn’t look dry or withered — quite the opposite, in fact. Many plants thrive in dry environments with little to no water. A xeriscaped lawn will include a range of plants, along with other features like mulch or hardscaping, to create an environment that still feels vibrant and lush, without requiring water.

What Kind of Irrigation is Used in San Diego Xeriscaping?

In San Diego, all xeriscaping requires drip irrigation to get the plants established. At Eco Minded Solutions, we design and build approximately 10 new xeriscape gardens a year in the San Diego area that range from $20-30k a project (browse some examples of our xersicaping work). The only xeriscaping projects we’ve done without drip irrigation were when the client was in charge of watering the garden until plants were established, at which point they can receive less water.

Best Xeriscaping Plants in San Diego

These plants are special for a variety of reasons, but mainly they are low-maintenance and well-suited to San Diego’s dry environment. Here are a few categories and examples of plants we rely on when xeriscaping for our client projects:

San Diego Native Plants

Native plants are already adapted to San Diego’s local rainfall, soil, and climate. These plants are low-maintenance because they have evolved to thrive in San Diego’s conditions: dry and sunny. Examples include:

Cleveland sage and white sage are both perennial shrubs that provide fragrant, silvery foliage and flowers that attract pollinators.

California lilac, a shrub that grows in forms from groundcovers to trees that is drought- and salt-tolerant. It bursts with blue or white blooms in the spring.

California poppy, the state flower, is cheerful, bright, and easy to grow. This perennial flower reseeds itself and grows with very little water.

Drought-Tolerant Options: Succulents and Cacti

If you want textural variety, succulents like yucca, agave, or aloe, and cacti like prickly pear add a desert feel. These plants are adapted to store water, meaning they need very little maintenance to remain green — and they can add dramatic structure to your landscaping.

Expansive Groundcovers, Grasses, and Flowers

Many people mistakenly assume xeriscaping will create a yard that looks like a desert, but you can achieve a lush and green space by selecting the right plants.

Groundcovers like kurapia tolerate drought while producing bright green leaves and delicate flowers. Silver carpet offers fluffy sage-like leaves and a muted green appearance that’s lush and full. For actual sade, bee’s bliss is a variety that covers ground and produces silvery leaves and fragrant flowers. After establishing these groundcover plants, many of them need little care and maintenance, as they grow and cover more ground each year.

Grasses like traditional turf might not thrive in San Diego, but options like deer grass and blue fescue will. These plants grow in stunning spherical shapes that add texture and vibrancy to your lawn without requiring much water. These plants require light pruning to keep them thriving, by cutting off dried foliage and trimming them into shape.

Flowers. Zeriscaping doesn’t mean sacrificing the color and beauty of a flowering garden. The California fuchsia provides bright red flowers in the fall, long after most other plants are done blooming. Another poppy variety, the matilija poppy, provides a distinct white-and-yellow look on a tall shrub. The desert mallow offers cup-shaped flowers in soft silver foliage that loves dry heat and full sun.

If you want more color, torch lilies can offer drama with bright upright flowers, and bougainvillea blooms year-round without any water, as it climbs and stuns in shades of pink, purple, orange, and white.

Trees

Trees are a lovely addition to xeriscaping and provide shade and structure. However, they can be a challenge as growing a new tree or establishing a deep root system for a mature tree does take a fair amount of water.

Fruitless olive trees, crepe myrtles, desert or Australian willow varieties, and native trees like redbud or torrey pine are well-suited to San Diego. One of our favorite options for xeriscaping trees at Eco Minded Solutions is the Tree Aloe. This shrubby succulent can grow to 6-12 feet high when mature. See this beautiful example of a Tree Aloe:

While these trees require water in their first few years, after they have grown and established their roots, these low-maintenance trees require a little pruning to keep them in beautiful shape.
